Bunny is one of the longest standing residents at The Rainbow Venues following his first performance in 2008. 8 years later, the Birmingham local is hugely recognised in the Digbeth community, having thrown a number of his own legendary parties alongside his resident performances here.
Ahead of his performance at Loco Dice’s USED + ABUSED show in Birmingham on December 9th, we sat down with Bunny for a chat and had the privilege of listening in on the recording of his exclusive mix (below).
Who are ya?
I’m Bunny, from the West Midlands and I’m a twenty something. I’m a DJ, producer & engineer.
What event are you a resident at The Rainbow Venues for?
Blackdot, Chapter Festival and the legendary FACE.
How did you get into DJing? Where did you learn your skills?
At 15, I was playing basketball for the Black Country and I was really into Hip Hop. My friend started showing me Loco Dice & Villalobos mixes and stuff his brother (who was in a production/DJ duo at the time) was doing. We used to go out with them in London to a party that was proper mad; dudes in high heels, bar girls dancing on the bar, amazing tunes, naughty lighting etc. It was a sign-me-up moment. sacked off any dreams my Mum had of me pursuing a stable job and bought a pair of shitty Kam turntables. Then, just practiced, practiced, & practiced!
How would you best describe your sound?
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
You can’t please everyone; you’re not a pizza.
What piece of equipment would you most like to own?
DJ wise: Sheltons Gold Technics SL-1210’s.
Production wise: A Simmons Digital ClapTrap (I reckon Villalobos uses one of these and he produces the best sounding claps in the world! True story.)
In General: A full size and fully functional Millennium Falcon.
What are we going to see from you in 2017?
Got a few releases finally coming out. A full EP on Volupso Records with one of my favourite artists on remix duties for it, a VA on Leftback Records and of couple of bits I can’t mention yet. Big big things in the pipeline for Penda & Social Underground, two parties I am heavily involved in. Lee McDonald [co-founder of The Rainbow] and I have been scheming away on ideas for The Rainbow too! Oh and… me & dad are going on a camping trip in the Arctic!
What does The Rainbow Venues mean to you?
Home. Literally – I lived on a mattress in the office at one point and I’m not the only one. Shelton, Ash (Subb-an), Lee (The Rainbow co owner) and Slobs have as well…I’m hoping it’s a good omen. 😉
