Syd Arthur have built an enviable reputation as a band apart. Formed out of the forest party rave scene in their home county Kent, and with a hard-won DIY self-sufficiency, they developed a sound and approach miles beyond their foursquare indie peers. Here was swirling rock with psychedelic textures, guitar-based trance with a funk groove. A band adaptive enough, bold enough, to tour with White Denim and The Strokes.
While Syd Arthur worked on their third album – the first to be released with happening British artist-run label Communion (Catfish and The Bottlemen, Bear’s Den) – with Beck’s guitarist Jason Falkner in the producer’s seat, the rest of the world caught up. Far from being young crate-diggers spun from a “Canterbury scene” wormhole, 2016 finds Syd Arthur lauded as ahead-of-the-curve trailblazers, pop-psych adventurers who count as peers Tame Impala, Temples and Toy.
