Birmingham born and bred artist Ashique Subhan aka Subb-an has had an enduring presence on the UK underground scene since the mid-2000s, when he found himself at the epicentre of a new dawn for Birmingham clubbing.
The now legendary Below Sunday raves in the original Rainbow Courtyard had just taken off and Subb-an had caught the attention of The Rainbow’s founder. Subsequently, he became a resident at Below and has since crafted a sound that is simultaneously tough, yet sensitive, raw, yet enticingly deep.
The Rainbow Venues has watched the One Records curator grow from an iconic resident to a DJ/producer regularly tours the globe and often performs at the likes of Fabric, DC10, Panaroma Bar and more.
Here’s what Subb-an had to say:
I actually used to live above The Rainbow Venues’ pub, back in the early days, before it become this huge multi-venue space. I would say they that those years have to be some of the best years of making music in my career; having had my studio there and partying for days on end.
Having a whole victorian boozer as a playground in your early twenties is pretty ridiculous; open bar, studio space upstairs and unlimited room to rave with no neighbours either side. Put it this way, it got milked!
The first track is a track I produced at The Rainbow in my early Below days and this was the first release I had out that made a difference, it’s on a label I hugely respect ‘Spectral Sound.’
This was a Below Sunday’s anthem and still is of course:
This on the courtyard before there was a permanent roof, smashed it!
This one just goes without saying!
Classic and just reminds me of Adam shelton at Below!
