Birmingham photographer Rob Low joins forces with The Rainbow Venues to create this year’s Chapter XII festival artwork. The exhibition images will feature on the line-up flyers, stage breakdowns and festival announcements.
The title of the piece, Paradise Lost: A Farewell to Brutalism in Birmingham, is a stand alone project, that was created for the purpose of remembering one of Birmingham’s most iconic buildings – and one of the country’s greatest examples of Brutalist Architecture – which is currently being demolished and transformed.
Rob explains, “Growing up in Birmingham, this building has always held a special fascination for me and today it forms the basis of my aesthetic in architecture photography. It’s sad to see such a landmark building go, but ultimately, the cost of upkeep and lack of interest in using the space for other commercial interests proved too prohibitive to its survival.
“The old Birmingham Central Library was itself built to mark a new chapter for the city in the early 1970’s, so it seems very apt that things have come full circle and its images are being used to celebrate all that is exciting about the re-generation of Birmingham in 2016.”
Amy Evans, Lead Designer at The Rainbow Venues encouraged the idea of working alongside a local photographer to create a memorable piece of artwork to mark The Rainbow’s 12th birthday.
Amy added, “We’ve always believed it’s important to work alongside locals to support the talent within the city of Birmingham. As a fan of Rob Low’s work, his Brutalism exhibition fitted perfectly with our Chapter XII branding because it marks a new chapter in the city.
“Rob’s work is exquisite. Using tasteful imagery of the city – by a local artist – for an inner-city festival’s artwork, was a no brainer and it’s even more special that we are using photos of the Central Library and Paradise Forum’s old architecture, making the festival artwork memorable too.”
Paradise Lost: A Farewell to Brutalism in Birmingham was exhibited at The Wick Festival last year as one installation and can be viewed on his website www.robertlowstudio.com
