American singer-songwriter and guitarist Ryley Walker from Rockford, Illinois released his fourth album Golden Sings That Have Been Sung on Dead Oceans last year. Sunny and shimmering, this record’s not unlike its cover, nor is it unlike a warm Chicago evening. Produced by Wilco multi-instrumentalist (and fellow Chicagoan) LeRoy Bach, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung is very much born of the windy city. ‘The Roundabout’ calls out Ryley’s favourite local watering hole, a handful of Chicago players appear on the record.
While tethered to this place he calls home, Golden Sings That Have Been Sung carves out its own microcosm. As The New York Times aptly put it, “his songs are rooms to poke around in, rustling the curtains.”
Back in 2015, Walker’s second album Primrose Green emerged to critical hosannas from the likes of NPR, Village Voice, Uncut, and Mojo – in the process, earning admiration of musicians who had chalked up no shortage of turntable miles in Walker’s life. Robert Plant declared himself a fan – as did double-bass legend Danny Thompson, with whom Ryley would later embark on a British tour.
